How to convert colors

  1. Enter a color. Input a color in any supported format: HEX (#RGB, #RRGGBB, with/without alpha), RGB/RGBA, HSL/HSLA, HSV, CMYK, OKLCH, or a named color.
  2. Conversion is automatic. The tool converts to all supported formats instantly and generates complementary, analogous, triadic, tetradic, and monochromatic palettes as you type. You can also click Convert to refresh.
  3. Copy individual values. Click any format value in the output to copy it to clipboard.
  4. Use palettes. The generated palettes help you find harmonious color variations for your design.

All conversion happens locally in your browser. Your color data never leaves your device.

Understanding Modern Color Spaces

sRGB Gamut Limitations

The sRGB color space, standard for web displays since 1996, covers only ~35% of the visible color spectrum. This means vibrant colors visible on modern wide-gamut displays (P3, Rec.2020) cannot be accurately represented in sRGB, leading to clipping and dullness.

OKLCH: Perceptually Uniform

OKLCH (Oklab Lightness-Chroma-Hue) is a modern color space designed for perceptual uniformity. Equal numerical changes in Lightness, Chroma, or Hue produce equal perceptual changes. This makes programmatic color manipulation—gradients, palette generation, contrast adjustments—predictable and consistent.

CMYK for Print Workflows

CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key/Black) is a subtractive color model used in print production. Unlike additive RGB spaces, CMYK represents ink percentages. Converting from RGB to CMYK involves gamut mapping—colors outside the printable gamut are approximated. Always proof CMYK values with your print vendor before production.

What Is the Color Converter?

The DevPouch Color Converter is a free, client-side developer utility that translates color values between the most common CSS and design formats, including HEX, RGB, RGBA, HSL, HSLA, HSV, and named colors. It runs entirely in your browser, so no color data ever leaves your machine, and the tool keeps working offline after the page loads. Built for frontend engineers, designers, and QA teams, it removes the guesswork from format switching and helps keep palettes consistent across every file in a project.

Use Cases

Frontend engineers use the Color Converter when a design mockup ships HEX codes but the stylesheet expects HSL or HSLA for theme variables. Backend developers generating dynamic SVG charts convert named colors to RGB for programmatic rendering. UI designers handing off palettes verify that values survive the move from design software into code without drift. QA engineers inspect computed styles in browser developer tools and cross-check them against source palettes during regression testing. Anyone building dark-mode themes, accessible interfaces, or brand-consistent component libraries benefits from instant, lossless conversion without installing desktop software or creating an account.

  • Convert HEX to RGB for inline styles and React components.
  • Switch HSL to HEX when exporting themes to CSS custom properties.
  • Translate named colors to RGBA for overlays, shadows, and gradients.
  • Validate palette consistency across design tools, documentation, and codebases.
  • Check computed styles against source colors during browser debugging.

How-To

Open the Color Converter from the developer tool category. Choose the input format that matches your source color value, then paste or type the color code into the text field. The converted results appear in every output panel automatically as you type, so you can compare HEX, RGB, and HSL representations side by side. Click the copy button beside any result to place it on your clipboard, then paste the value into your stylesheet, component, or design asset.

  • Open the Color Converter in the developer category.
  • Pick the input format matching your source color.
  • Type or paste the color value into the field.
  • Read the converted results across all output panels.
  • Click copy to place any result on your clipboard.
  • Paste the value into your CSS, HTML, or design file.

Bookmark the Color Converter for fast color translation during development, debugging, and design handoff. It requires no sign-up, no installation, and no network requests after the initial page load, making it a reliable part of any local development workflow.
